The government has appointed Ambassador Jan Eliasson as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He most recently served as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and has previously been, inter alia, Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs, President of the United Nations General Assembly and Ambassador to the UN and Washington.
Ambassador Eliasson will take office as Chairman on 1 June. The Chairman can serve for no more than two consecutive five-year terms.
‘It is with great anticipation I am assuming this position with SIPRI. I have always had sincere respect for the Institute’s work and appreciation of its global reputation. I am certain that SIPRI will continue to play an important role in addressing different aspects of international peace and security,’ Jan Eliasson said in a SIPRI press release.
In addition to Sven-Olof Petersson, Eliasson’s predecessors as SIPRI Chairman have been Göran Lennmarker, Rolf Ekéus, Daniel Tarchys, Inga Thorsson, Ernst Michanek, Rolf Björnerstedt, Karin Söder, Hans Blix, Rolf Edberg, Gunnar Myrdal and Alva Myrdal.
