The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Sweden, Paul Johnston, addresses the fact that the UK is attempting to keep refugees from smuggling themselves into the country in an opinion piece published by Svenska Dagbladet. In the article, the Ambassador addresses the fact that the UK is attempting to keep refugees from smuggling themselves into the country. “The latest tragedy on the Medditarranean earlier this month with 200 people dead is a grim reminder of the horrible human consequences of the migration crisis that is affecting Europe”. Johnston claims that the UK is taking responsibility for its own country by upholding its borders and keeping an organised migration system. At the same time, however, he emphasises the need to solve the problem at its core: “Development, education, and conflict resolution contributes to decreased strains and pressure that forces people to embark on the unsafe trip to Europe”. Johnston concludes by stating that the EU summit in Valletta in November could serve as a turning point for tackling the difficult problems at its origins.
